Skedaddle twaddle is a blog site for the staff, guides and general motley crew associated with Saddle Skedaddle. Free reign ( not a Giant Full Susser ) is granted to these fortunate individuals to spout forth as much ‘twaddle’ as they wish, they can even post interesting, funny, informative things. Editorial control is limited so of course the views, opinions and general twaddle expressed here are not necessarily those of Saddle Skedaddle (though we probably agree, or at least would in exchange for a pint of beer!). Do feel free to add your comments constructive, funny, even abusive. If you have a good story you feel should be on here email us on info@skedaddle.co.uk
Saddle Skedaddle was started many years ago in a galaxy far far away. Two itinerants (Andrew and Paul) exploring the wilds of South America got stuck in a two man tent in a snow storm in the Chilean Andes at 4500 metres. With a whole day to actually talk to each other rather than bike along miles apart, and once the eye spy was exhausted the conversation inevitably came around to what they were going to do when the money ran out. Doing this cycling travel thing for a living sounded like fun! A couple of weeks later after crossing the Atacama desert our trepid due cycled into the coastal city of Iquique only to be chased down the street by what seemed to be a crazy Chilean shouting ‘Hey Gringos, hey rubios’. Actually Sergio is only mildly crazy, runs a bike shop, the local bike club and is still Skedaddle’s principle guide in Chile. Bumping into Sergio cemented the cycling holiday idea.
About a year later back in the UK, our duo had booked a stand at the Birmingham NEC bike show. However there was one small problem, no name. A drunken weekend on the Northumberland coast with friends, some of the finest brains (or at least prior to the years of alcohol abuse!), in Bamburgh (which is admittedly very small) resulted in the silly name that is Saddle Skedaddle. It could have been worse, it was nearly the Red Hot Chile Trekkers. Who actually managed to come up with the name is a point of much debate within that group, no one can remember for definite so it’s a case of collective responsibility.
Our first trip to Chile all those years ago with a great group of people……..our first Skedaddle mountain biking weekend in Derbyshire….our first Picos de Europa Mountain bike trip (still some of the best in Europe)….. and of course some great people (customers and ‘staff’), Mark, Wingy, Naomi, Dan, Sir Woods, among many others….… there are worse things to do for a living!
And its just gone on from there…..the official version is on the skedaddle website www.skedaddle.co.uk
